How do i get hair like this?

Ok ,so i asked for this hair style at the salon, and they layered my hair and thinned it out so i could get it like this down below.

My problem is, when i asked how to style my hair like this in a previous question, i was told i have to straighten it, and then apply some mouse and a little bit of styling wax, to make the side parts more noticeable and edge like.

Though when i asked in another question:

Which goes first, do i put mouse in my hair and then straighten it or straighten my hair and then put mouse in it? People told me putting mouse in my hair after straightening it defeats the purpose of straightening your hair in the first place..

I can accept that answer… but then…. how do i achieve the look that this guy has in his picture? straightening it alone, doesn't make it look like that, close to, but the edges need to be more spiky and stick out, which i can only imagine would work if i used mouse and wax after straightening it.

What are your thoughts? I'm confused by everyone's mixed responses.
